Joys Green Primary School

Brody’s Trust, a Gloucestershire-based charity dedicated to supporting children with complex disabilities and their families, is thrilled to announce the successful purchase of the former Joys Green Primary School. This transformative acquisition will pave the way for establishing a bespoke multi-sensory hub, providing essential support and services for families across the Forest of Dean and beyond.

The new Brody’s Sensory Hub will be a sanctuary for children aged 0–18 with complex disabilities, life-shortening conditions, and special educational needs, as well as much needed family support for their parents and siblings.  Driven by the lived experiences of the charity's founders, Nicola and Mike Baggott and the lack of provision locally to spend family time and create precious memories, this initiative honours the legacy of their son, Brody, who inspired the creation of a space where children and families can create joyful memories, reduce isolation and build support networks within the community.

A Vision for Inclusion and Support

The Sensory Hub is designed to provide vital resources in an accessible, welcoming environment. Families will have access to:

  • Themed sensory areas: Blackout Sensory Room, Chill-Out Zone, Activity Room, and Soft Playroom.
  • Specialist facilities: A community meeting space and an accessible, well-equipped changing room.
  • Supportive services: After-school and holiday clubs, sibling sessions, coffee mornings, and more.

“Brody’s smile lit up every room,” said Nicola Baggott, Chair of Brody’s Trust. “We want to share that light with others by creating a space where families can laugh, play, and feel supported, without worrying about the financial and emotional burdens that often come with complex needs.”

A Community-Driven Approach

Since establishing the Charity in January 2024 an amazing £90,000 has been secured to equip the sensory spaces, and further fundraising is underway to reach the estimated £250,000 needed to fully bring the vision to life. The project has received pledges of support from local organisations, such as the Pied Piper Trust and Barnwood Trust, local Councils  as well as support from the wider Gloucestershire community.

Volunteers and partnerships will play a pivotal role in the Hub’s success. The charity has already engaged local tradespeople, schools, and families in the project and plans to offer a range of volunteering opportunities, from gardening to facilitating play sessions.

Building a Brighter Future

The purchase of Joys Green Primary School marks a critical milestone in the Trust’s journey. Renovations are set to begin in early 2025, with the Sensory Hub expected to open in Summer 2025.

Speaking on this milestone Lynn Teague, Fundraiser for Brody’s Trust said,

“We are grateful to Gloucestershire County Council and our supporters for believing in our vision,” together, we can create a lasting impact on the lives of children and families facing extraordinary challenges in the Forest of Dean and across Gloucestershire.”
